Traveling on a High Raw food diet
April 28th, 2010 by Dorota Zuzanna
I am currently on a working vacation in Bloomington, Indiana, USA, over 2000 miles away from my home town of Vancouver BC.
I am here visiting one of my bestest friends in the world – my awesome sister Urszula. She livesĀ & studies here @ the University of Indiana. She’s doing her Ph.D. in comparative literature – yes, she’s a smart cookie!
The journey to Bloomington was not an easy one and lasted nearly 24 hours. It included a bus ride, 2 flights and lots of wait time (not to mention about a day of running around, before I even left, getting an emergency passport when I realized I had lost mine).
However, I didn’t have any issues sticking to my High Raw High Energy diet. With the right preparation, anyone can stick to a raw or high raw food diet while traveling, even very long distances
Here are the kinds of foods I stocked up on:
Fresh Fruit
Orange, persimmon, nectarine, tupperware full of pre-washed grapes and chopped strawberries
Tip: Pack pre-washed fruit which isn’t messy to eat and is not squishy. If it is squishy, put it in a container.
Raw Energy Bars
Prior to my trip, I purchased a bag of raw or high raw bars, such as Lara raw fruit & nut bars, Vega’s Vibrance bars and a low-sugar halva bar. I selected a large variety of these bars.
Dinner Food
I packed one large Tupperware box full of a crunchy salad made with broccoli, radishes and “ground beef” made with tofu and spices. To eat along with this, I packed a few slices of brown rice bread and flax crackers.
Tip: Make sure your food container is leak-proof!
Super Special Treats
I brought along a couple of ‘Bliss Balls’ made with coconut butter, nuts, maca, gogi berrires, and carob. So yummy!
Tip: Having a Super Special Treat is very useful if you think you might be tempted by other convenient snacks but want to stick to your own plan. Since you’ll be looking forward to having your supremely yummy treat, you won’t even notice other things.
Drinks
I had a large bottle of water with me to stay hydrated. On the plane, I ordered green tea or sparkling water. Whenever I got thirsty, I purchased pure water or green tea in coffee shops. I was also lucky enough to walk by a salad restaurant in the Chicago airport, and picked up a box of coconut juice.
Tip: You can’t bring your own fluids with you on a plane & you might be required to declare raw fruits and vegetables. If you do declare them, you most likely will not have a problem with bringing them.
I packed the food I would be eating on my first flight with me on the carry-on, and the rest in my suitcase, and then swapped the empty tupperware for new food. Easy.
Once I did finally get to Bloomington, I didn’t even feel that tired, even though I had been awake for the better part of 24 hours. In fact, as I lied down to sleep, I was still buzzing with energy. I woke up 6 hours later, and had a productive work day at my laptop. I should also mention that before the trip, I was packing in the salads and green smoothies, to ensure my energy would be high before and during the tirp. This allowed me to enjoy my journey and keep anxiety and stress which invariably comes along with getting ready for one to a minimum.
Update: I have now been in Bloomington for several days. I love it here and I am really enjoying spending time with my sister. But I do miss my Lovebug
More updates to come…
